i have an awesome grant from cohere to do some work on metaphors or figurative language.

we can think of metaphors and similes as special types of semantic triples: they come in forms of subject-predicate-object, where the predicate indicates a notion of likeness. much of pre-llm nlp work quantifies this notion of likeness through distance functions. but it seems that LLMs outperform these methods in very interesting ways.
